Sutton Summer events brochure launch

Jill, Sharon, Sarah and Kathi dancing in the Sutton sun
Lovely audience and good to meet up again with organiser Kate Pulesden and Radio Royal Marsden DJ Neil

Jill writes:
Once again four Shimmies brought out the sun and blue sky for the latest jaunt down Sutton High Street. We had been asked to support SCOLA’s launch of their summer brochure and, although there was a little nip to the air, the weather was so much more summery than it had been during the week. Our music and dance soon drew the crowds to the staging area outside Waterstone’s and we were so pleased that shoppers took time out of their day to clap along to our dance routines. There were many smiling faces in the crowd and one or two even bopped along, enjoying the happy tunes. We gave a second airing to our new number, Habibi, which was very well received.

What a happy crowd they were - laughing, singing along, dancing and clapping - encore!!!!

Next rendez-vous St Helier on 16 June and then the Belmont Festival, supporting the Royal Marsden, on 15 July

The Sutton Memory Lane Cafe

Bernadettte, Jill, Sharon and Kathi dancing at the regular Alzheimer's Club event

Bernadette writes
"The Shimmies got an enthusiastic welcome from the guests at Sutton Alzheimers Memory Lane Cafe on Saturday May 5th. We started our programme
with the first public performance of our catchy new pop dance Habibi. The audience needed no encouragement to clap along to the beat, and they clapped
and cheered loudly at the end of every number. What a fantastic crowd - just how we like them!
It's always a pleasure dancing for the Alzheimers Society - we're already looking forward to the next time!"

Double Birthday celebration in Langley Vale

Langley Vale became Langley Veil this Saturday as Shimmies Sarah, Becky, Kathi and Bernadette headed off in the Shimmymobile through the snow
to provide entertainment at a very special children's birthday party.

The village hall had undergone a transformation and looked fabulous decorated with Aladdin props, Cleopatra snakes and best of all:
the birthday girls costumed up beautifully as little princesses of the Nile welcoming us at the door.

We danced a varied 15 minute set including a specially choreographed fan veil majency (entrance number), Bern and Kathi's inimitable stick dance
and the flouncy-skirted gypsy style "Disko" which had the little girls, all sat on their magic carpet, clapping away enthusiastically.
There was no trouble encouraging most of the 30 little girls (and a couple of Mums!) to get up and slip on a hip belt and join in the fun.

Bernadette had us all organised into colour groups based on our costumes and led the warm-up then the Shimmies taught some basic moves
to each group in turn before we got together to dance to Shakira. We ran a competition for the Best Bellydance Pose that we all
agreed had to go to one lovely little mover, we presented the birthday girls with a Shimmy birthday present and all sang to them then we got together
in a big circle for a final bop with the feather boas and mini sticks. We were impressed by how well many of the girls picked up the moves,
several looked like they had had dancing lessons and the older girls in particular showed a lot of poise and grace - keep it up girls!

An enchanting afternoon with fabulously well-behaved and enthusiastic girls! Encore we say!

Arabic-themed Do at the Longmead Centre in Epsom

Kathi, Sharon, Bernadette and Becky booked the flying carpet and kicked off the year in fine style at the Longmead Centre
which specialises in events for the over 50s. We're performed a varied half-hour set
and had a good old shimmy with plenty of enthusiastic audience participation!
